Responsibility
The designer (1) leads the group in making overall design decisions and (2) completes drawings of the monument and surrounding grounds. You work closely with all members of the group and consider their views.

Actions and Decisions
With the group, decide on a type and style of monument.
Will your type be monument, memorial, statue, or public sculpture? Why?
Will your style be realistic, abstract, figurative, or allegorical? Why?
If figurative, whose figure(s) will you use? Get input from the historian on this.
If allegorical, what ideas do you want to express? What symbols will you use?

These key choices will impact other features of your design. Seek input from group members. Record your choices on the Design Choices organizer.

Consider these aspects of your monument too. Get input from group members. Use the links here as needed. Record your decisions on the Design Choices organizer.
What shape or form will it have?
What materials will you use to make it? (link below)
What color(s) will it be?
What size will it be?
What mood or effect do you want it to suggest? For example, tragedy, triumph, sadness, hope, fear, determination, forgiveness?
How will the surrounding grounds look? How will they enhance the monument? For ideas, go back to the monuments you've reviewed and look at the grounds around them.

Now begin to design! Use paper and pencil or a computer drawing program. Try sketching several basic ideas. Show them to group members.

When the group approves of the design, create final drawings of your monument. Make two drawings showing the monument from among the following views-front, rear, right side, left side. Label the dimensions and include the surrounding grounds in the drawings.
