Publicist

Responsibility
The publicist (1) creates a name for the monument and (2) writes the dedication speech and (3) press release. You work closely with the designer and historian.

Actions and Decisions
Consider the type, style, and design of your group's monument. Choose a name that reflects what the group is trying to communicate about the Underground Railroad. Will you name it after a person, event, place, or idea?

Most monuments are unveiled at public ceremonies where someone makes a dedication speech. Make your speech inspirational, explaining whom it honors, why it was built, and what impact you hope it has. For ideas, check out the links to dedication speeches.

Write a press release announcing the completion and dedication of your monument. Press releases go to TV and radio stations and newspapers. Stick to the facts-explain who, what, where, when, why, and how. The links below have press release tips and samples.
