Glossary

Gullah - a distinct group of African Americans who are descendants of enslaved Africans from West Africa who have lived for centuries in the LowCountry and Sea Islands and who have been able to preserve more of their African cultural traditons than any other black community in the United States.

Lowcountry - the low-lying counties and off shore islands along the Atlantic coast that stretch from Charleston, South Carolina, to Savannah, Georgia.

Sea Islands - a chain of more than 100 small, marshy islands that lie along the Atlantic coast of South Carolina and Georgia.
