Rice Planter

"The period of rice planting was the age of magnificence in the Lowcountry. There probably never again will be in this region a culture to equal in glamour plantation life."

Alberta Morel Lachicotte in 1955 book, Georgetown Rice Plantations

"...fields lay fallow; damaged floodgates and canal banks lay ignored; and farm tools began to rust. Docks and rice barges stood vacant...The work songs of the slaves...ceased....Over time, the rivers and swamps began to claim the rice fields....The empire built on rice had fallen."

Christopher C. Boyle, Horry County Historical Society, South Carolina

You are a descendant of a South Carolina family that once owned several large and profitable rice plantations near Charleston for generations.

As a descendant of a rice planter you:

  • are proud of your family's heritage and appreciate the important role rice plantations played in the history of South Carolina
  • belong to several organizations devoted to preserving Southern heritage and would be sorry to see more plantations disappear

On the other hand, trying to maintain your family's former plantation home and property drained heirs' finances for decades. The family finally sold it to developers who turned the property into an exclusive hunting preserve for quail and wild turkey. You understand why some people are willing to sell historic plantation properties to developers.

Your job on the task force is to provide information about the cultural significance of the rice heritage. You also want to point out preservation efforts and remind them that public nostalgia about the former Southern plantation lifestyle remains high.

You are UNDECIDED about the resort development.
