National Standards for History-Historical Thinking

Standard 2-Historical Comprehension

  • E-appreciate historical perspectives (be able to describe the past on its own terms through the eyes and experiences of those who were there; avoid "present-mindedness," judging the past solely in terms of present-day norms and values)

Standard 3-Historical Analysis and Interpretation

  • B-consider multiple perspectives of various people in the past by demonstrating their differing motives, beliefs, interests, hopes, and fears

Standard 5-Historical Issues/Analysis and Decision-Making

  • A-identify problems and dilemmas in the past (analyze the interests, values, perspectives, and points of view of those involved)
  • B-marshal evidence of antecedent circumstances and current factors contributing to contemporary problems and alternative courses of action
  • D-propose alternative choices for addressing the problem (evaluate each in terms of ethical consideration [fair? just?], the interests of different people involved, and likely consequences of each proposal)
  • E-formulate a position or course of action on an issue (identify nature of problem, analyze the underlying factors contributing to it, choose a plausible solution from a choice of carefully evaluated options)
