"Historic
sites have fascinating, engaging, and compelling stories to tell.
Preserving these places, listening to their stories and learning
from them are essential to our understanding of whom we are as
Americans."
You
own a successful tour bus company in South Carolina and know that
tourism is one of the major businesses in the state. Many tourists
visit the state to:
-
swim and golf at the popular coastal resorts
- enjoy
"heritage tourism"
- visit
historic sites to learn about the state's rich history
Your
company serves both groups. The new resort development will bring
more tourists to the state and help your business grow.
Currently,
you offer a popular bus tour of historic sites and Gullah communities
in the Lowcountry. You have had to revise this tour several times
in recent years as historic sites and communities disappear to
make way for new development projects. When that happens, your
tour turns more and more to museums and historic marker programs
to showcase the past.
Your
job is to present information about the importance of tourism
to South Carolina and some of the issues facing the tourist industry.
Your input will help task force members better understand the
impact of their decision. You look forward to sharing your enthusiasm
for tourism and hope to help bridge the differences on the task
force.
