Slave Advertisements
Along the way, slaves throughout history have worked to gain
the rights we now often take for granted. Slaves fought
against enslavement to gain liberty, freedom and all the
natural promised to all citizens of the United States. When
slaves escaped, their owners posted advertisements for their
return.
Within the
following pages are the slave advertisements of Mr. Henry Bibb
and Mr. Elisha Green. Also you will find interpretations
of their lives, in the form of diaries, by Diane
Copeland and Keri
Tarvin.
To
proceed, select the image that matches the advertisement to
the right. If you match the correct image and advertisement,
you will directed to that person's story:

NOTICE
My fellow
Kentuckians I am asking for your help in finding my
property, Elisha W. Green. He speaks proper English
and is very polite for a coloured boy. He goes around
preaching his fake words about the Black Baptist
Church of Kentucky. What would he know about the
bible? The boy known, as Elisha Green is a dark boy
with a big nose and lips. He was last seen wearing a
stolen black suit jacket, slacks, vest, a white dress
shirt, and a red tie. If you see him please contact me
Grover Douglass or the Kentucky police.
