Denita Powell

Denita Powell has been working at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center since 1997 and she has served as the Project Administrator for the Education department since January 2001. She received her B.A. in History from Wittenberg University (1996) and her M. A. in Education from Xavier University (2002). Her love for history and the Underground Railroad began in 1995, shortly after completing an independent study and summer internship at the Cincinnati Museum Center. It was there that she began actively researching slavery & abolitionism in the United States and other parts of the world.

She is a member of the Cincinnati Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a Steering Committee member for the Dress for Success Professional Women's Group. Ms. Powell is also actively involved in church activities at the Kennedy Heights Church of Christ. In her spare time she enjoys writing poetry and short stories, reading, making dolls and spending time with family and friends.
