FIRST STOP TO FREEDOM

Year One of the Underground Railroad Project

The 1999 Critical Fusion Project was the first of a three-year pilot project involving Miami University's Interactive Media Studies Center, Cincinnati Bell, the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, the Hughes Center (Cincinnati, Ohio), and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The project began in October 1998 and concluded in May 1999.

The primary purpose of this one-of-a-kind undertaking was for higher education, secondary education, corporations, and non-profit organizations to collectively assist 16 inner city 11th grade high school students in the creation of Internet on-line publications. Students' research and web site centered on political, religious, economic, literary, historic, and artistic aspects of the Underground Railroad from the first decade of the 19th century to the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.
